Star Trek: Online - Is this the end of RPG-X?

Not a chance. RPG-X offers so much more than STO, with more detailed interiors, player stories and n 24.6% (20)

Yes, RPG-X is finished. STO offers the next generation of Trek roleplaying! Engage! 22.2% (18)

RPG-X is already in a weak state, and STO could steal it's players. The EF servers could be empty! 20.9% (17)

STO is unlikely to effect RPG-X. 18.5% (15)

STO might not have the ship interiors that RPG-X has, but it is pretty solid on everything else... R 13.5% (11)

I vote for "player stories and n."

That said, I've not played RPG-X in a long time but I doubt I'll got to STO. I mean, what actually is the story for STO?

 #2 - Posted by: oberlerchner123 (Member) on 01-24-2010 at 10:52
I played the Beta. Story doesnt make sense quiet often.
But i think RPG-X has been dying for a while anyway.
I dunno i guess...

#3 - Posted by: TiberiousKirk (Member) on 01-24-2010 at 12:20
STO has one major problem. You have to subscribe to it. Many aren't going to want to pay monthly. RPGX is free and that gives it an advantage.

 #4 - Posted by: Victor_Ludwig (Member) on 01-24-2010 at 16:21
I imagine that STO will at least rid RPG-X of those who mistake RPG-X with a shooter. but I fear that the rate at which the community receives new members will decline. I for one found out about rpg-x by looking for a star trek rpg, and now people are more likely to find STO.

#5 - Posted by: GreenKiller (Member) on 01-26-2010 at 05:22
I played sto beta too, and more than a year ago rpg-x. i totally agree with TiberiousKirk

 #6 - Posted by: Legoland348 (Member) on 01-26-2010 at 11:08
Agree with Tiberious too.
I've got my own RPG Clan and I think it brings the players closer together offers them more chances to interact and to act as a group.

 #7 - Posted by: Arron_Dominion (Member) on 01-26-2010 at 15:56
Honestly, RPG-X has not had the best activity. STO is one of the newer trek games that is going to deliver. Based off of the veteran players I have talked to that have been active in rpgx, I can tell there will be a drop, even if deemed small

What part of the USS Voyager do you think was best reproduced in-game for EF1 (and expansion)?

Deck 1 - Bridge (with Conference Lounge and Ready Room) 60.9% (78)

Deck 11 - Main Engineering (with hazardous cargo bay) 18.7% (24)

Deck 5 - Sickbay 7% (9)

Deck 4 - Hazard Operations (with transporter room, brig and holodeck) 4.6% (6)

Deck 10 - Shuttlebay 4.6% (6)

Most of the main rooms were acurate but left out details. I voted for sickbay. I would pick Engineering and the transporter room over Deck 1 because of details.

#2 - Posted by: GriffinEndurance (Member) on 01-17-2010 at 23:13
I would say deck 1 based on scale, it seemed the most realistic where as everything else in ef seemed to be hugely over scale, but the bridge like most areas was lacking detail. The raised part of the floor in the center of the bridge "where the captains chair is, is the wrong shape, and everyone knows the viewscreen wasnt quite right, but dispite that, most of the detail was accurate. I would say sickbay next, then Engineering, although engineering was way to big, it looked massive lol.

#3 - Posted by: SED (Member) on 01-19-2010 at 05:06
I would say the Engineering Deck was reproduce to the letter. The Bridge scaling was quite to scale. The only thing I didn't like about the bridge was the conference room didn't have a door leading out of the room except the bridge only. Then if you looked out the window to the right you could actually see the the map parts from the glass to the walls.

Probably The Fallen, but I'd much more appreciate creative content instead.

 #2 - Posted by: oberlerchner123 (Member) on 12-19-2009 at 15:13
Yes the Fallen is great. It has a great story, enemies from the show, you can climb on stuff. (*thinks of the edges of the stupid Idyrll bridge*)
The levels are quite detailed and have atmosphere. And the tricorder is actually useful!

And something from Bridge Commander: Vehicles
Flying back to the Enterprise in a shuttle or taking out targets with phasers! stick out tongue

 #3 - Posted by: Arron_Dominion (Member) on 12-19-2009 at 18:31
Maybe some conversion of the Klingon Honor Guard deathmatch maps. The Fallen would be another good option.

 #4 - Posted by: GSIO01 (Member) on 12-20-2009 at 02:14
The Fallen all the way ... as already stated above the levels where quite detailed and hat really god lighting and sounds etc. which cretated a very good atmosphere.

#5 - The Fallen - Posted by: TJFDaedalus (Member) on 12-20-2009 at 04:16
I want the fallen for elite force because:

1. The Fallen was a great game
2. The Fallen was a buggy game
3. The Fallen lacked the first person view, which makes games more real.
4. The Fallen lacked good graphics compared to the likes of EF.

#6 - Posted by: fraggles (Member) on 12-20-2009 at 08:27
The Fallen has bad overall graphics, but probably did because it needed to sacrifice texture detail in compensation for the cool little details seldom a game so old had. Things like foot physics, actual facial movement during dialogue, and those cute little fireflies that even have AI programmed into them that sometimes follow you around in caves. The levels were also much larger.

As long as someone is willing to port the ability to climb things from Urban Terror or TrueCombat:Elite, I'd appreciate Fallen maps.. But as I said, I would probably like Fallen-like maps instead, because I can still play The Fallen, no matter that it doesn't accept DirectX 10 and wants to use its own 30 FPS software renderer on me.

#7 - Posted by: Chrissstrahl (Member) on 12-20-2009 at 10:34
The Fallen, btw anyone else played the Convergence mod for it ?

#8 - Posted by: fraggles (Member) on 12-20-2009 at 11:21
I downloaded it once and played the first level and forgot about it. I can't remember my feelings for it.

 #9 - Posted by: Luke20 (Staff) on 12-20-2009 at 11:37
I'm downloading it now, actually, having played the demo for the first time in a while and loving it.

 #10 - Convergance - Posted by: TJFDaedalus (Member) on 12-21-2009 at 02:27
Yes Chris I've played convergance, but I never completed it. I got to like the 5th level and got bored. The gameplay needed more variety. To me it was similar objectives to every level. But great programming Two Thumbs Up!

 #11 - Posted by: Jonathan_Kent (Member) on 12-21-2009 at 08:35
Hmm, levels for Elite Force?

My choices in order with reasons.

1; New Worlds. Why? Big planet maps. EF needs them badly. The fact that they could have colonies on them doesn't hurt either.

2; Away Team. Why? An excellent variety of exciting locations.

3; The Fallen. Why? same as above. It was a fun game too, and Id love to see some of the environments first person with better graphics.

In closing; I still enjoy EFfiles for the PoTD and for the occasional new file.
I still use RPG-X for machinima.... but my hopes for fun Trek multiplayer gaming now rest on Star Trek Online.

 #12 - Posted by: Luke20 (Staff) on 12-21-2009 at 12:34
I've just been playing The Fallen this evening, and it rocks! big grin I never realised it could be this good.

 #13 - Posted by: Jonathan_Kent (Member) on 12-22-2009 at 10:27
Its a brilliant story. Still not quite finished with the last bit, but Im already feeling a strong desire to watch the greater part of DS9 that Ive been missing all these years.

 #14 - Posted by: Luke20 (Staff) on 12-23-2009 at 04:51
I've been playing it for the first time all this week. I utterly love it. big grin Really good game, and the music is excellent too.

But aside from The Fallen, what other Trek game plots / elements could work in EF?

 #15 - Posted by: Jonathan_Kent (Member) on 12-23-2009 at 10:04
For plots? Away Team for sure.

Co-Op mod proves that the tech exists, and we know there are capable enough artists.
All that would be left would be voice-rips from the original away team game and all the materials would be there to totally remake Away Team in Elite Force.

#16 - Posted by: shoopdanwoop (Member) on 12-25-2009 at 07:12
I would haved to say some of Star Trek Generations from microprose, it unfortunatly wont work on my X but i do still have a 95 and i occasionally hook it up and play Generations, when i was younger i played that game obsesivly its absolutly fantasic.

yes negative naff graphics, who cares

rebuilt in EF it would look nice, i think if i knew how to make maps *hint hint* i would design a redo of Generations.

so id pick that smile

No Scripting Extension for Mappers - Mods
  Posted by: Luke20 on 01-14-2010 @ 14:23 - Source: HaZardModding
This News Item has been viewed 839 times! Elite Force 2 News
HaZardModding is developing a Script extension to it's Co-op Mod that allows the mapper to control scripted events without scripting, this will also work with the Co-op Mod Mini.

Mappers can now use the Überradiant ONLY to control script events, no scripting is need to make interactive levels.

All the mapper has to do is create a trigger, set parameters on the trigger and as soon as a trigger will be triggered it starts a script that checks the parameters and executes all the commands.
This will allow mappers to:
- Animate a NPC
- Route/Control a NPC
- Re-spawn a NPC
- Print a Message to all players Huds
- Play Dialogs and Sounds
- Remove Objects from the Level
- Hide Objects
- Show Objects
- Make Objects Solid (You collide)
- Make Objects NotSolid (You can walk trough)
- Make Forcefields Interactive
- Make Objects Explode and remove
- add/remove Huds
- set Objectives
- Complete/Fail the mission
- load next map
- Give/Take Weapons
- lock/unlock doors
- use Tricorder modulation
- save the game (single-player)
- immobilize/mobilize Players
- kill NPC/Players
- Control Dynamic Lights

There will be a Manual and also numerous examples how to use all of these available features in a map.

We are open for suggestions and request from mappers to build in features.

So what do you think? Yes, it was very sudden (not least to us Filefront admins), and as of yet, there has been no official announcment concerning why changes to the website's layout have been made - don't misunderstand, this change has happened across all Filefront network sites. I'm expecting the response here to be overtly hostile, and for once, I don't blame you guys. Sadly, it is all out of my hands. eek!

you also forgot the mercenaries and you spelled Idryll wrong
and polls are still bugged so we cant vote anyway

I would vote for the scavangers, followed by the empty crown

 #3 - Posted by: Arron_Dominion (Member) on 08-11-2009 at 09:09
Looks like the Idrill will win, which isn't a bad thing.

But, I have to say I voted different. The Etherians were my pick. The were floating and communicated through telepathy (not attacking, even though it seemed such).

After that, this would be the order:
#2. Borg
#3. Forge
#4. Exomorphs
#5. Empty Crown
#6. Idrill
#7. Attrexians
#8. Scavengers

Developer Griffin Endurance of the much anticipated SP mod Star Trek: Freelance has released a new video showing off an alpha-version of the space flight mode, where, walking up to the bridge of your ship, you can switch outside, and pilot the vessel directly, much like in Legacy and Bridge Commander. In addition, a stellar cartography HUD can be activated, showing you what planet is what and where. The mode change is apparently real-time and means once in orbit of a planet, you can switch back to the bridge and presumably walk on down to the Transporter Room, ready for an adventure. Exciting stuff! smile

Enjoy!

The Mini version will not include the modified map-files, this will shrink the size of the Modification down to about 10 Megabyte. This will be very pleasant for all those interested in the Coop mod using a low bandwidth internet connection.

Elite Force gamer "Jaz" is planning a set of competitions for Elite Force 1 Holomatch at the Clanbase website. Apparently, if sixteen teams can be arranged, Jaz is hoping to start an EF Cup which will use a "very cool" mod for the games. Go figure.

Thanks to John at Elite Force Review for this news.

Alhough I am pleased to see that while most members who contribute here at Elite Force Files make fair and valid comments - following our rules, some do not. A user has been banned and I'd just like to repeat what I said when I first became site admin, that I'll only tolerate user comments that have a point and make a positive contribution to discussion, without becoming overly opinionated. Pointing out what you don't like about a file or Picture of the Day, for example, is fine. Same with talking about what could be improved. But becoming abusive, inconsiderate or even just writing "OMG THIS SUCKS" is not fine.

I encourage healthy and pleasant debate here, as was recently shown when speaking about the community negativity problems concerning RPG-X on this site. I hope for more of the same in the future. smile

Roleplay Community Negativity - Clan News
Posted by: Luke20 on 09-22-2009 @ 13:22 - Source: Research conducted on the Ubergames forums
This News Item has been viewed 9595 times! Elite Force News
Hello there. Over the past few months the Elite Force online roleplay (or RPG-X) community has seen a massive decrease in activity and an increase in bickering and petty disagreements... Fewer actual roleplays and more aggressively differing opinions. This has become known as community negativity. As chief admin at Elite Force Files, the source for most new EF and RPG-X releases and a community centre, I took it upon myself to investigate and get to the bottom of the problem, and this essay lists my general findings.

Having looked through gamers responses to my enquires at the Ubergames roleplay forums (closest thing to neutral ground that RPG-X has aside from EFFiles) and reviewing content on various community sites, I have identified a number of matters that I believe have caused negativity, along with a few humble suggestions on where to go from here. Included in this report are quotes from players involved sharing their thoughts on the community. I have attemped to be as neutral and objective as I can be, so let us start with roleplay sessions themselves.

Stale Roleplays?
Quote:
Grizz: I remember my first RP attempt, everyone was nice, showed me round the ship and no-one complained that I should do so in Singleplayer. It was all peaceful and basically just the standard 'Crew-Life' roleplay.

Since then, it's become apparent that you can't learn the game with other people outside of official teaching environments as easily as you could. Maps are just looking the same (as opposed to the epic starship environment when you start playing), roleplay stories are used over and over and over again and the only time I play the game anymore is for Serial Roleplays (two of them).

Roleplays are stale. Everything has been done. Or has it? I know of play masters and plot writers that claim their serialized roleplays are not like the rest. But under closer examination, their format and plots are in no way unique - indeed, they end up getting no attendees to the RP, even if players have signed up almost by default. Much plotting work and planning seems to be going down the drains, and nobody seems to care. Then again, nobody should care, because its just a game. It is common courtesy, however, to attend roleplays that you have signed up to. There are exceptions, and these get the numbers attending, such as {UFP}s Star Trek: First Steps, Solaris, the Asteroid Base roleplay and back before it was suspended, HoloFederations SRP. Notice a common theme? Well for those readers not on the ball with the settings of some of these events, none are simply set on a Federation starship on a standard mission. First Steps is set on mankinds first major outer-space voyage. Asteroid Base is located on an well asteroid base. And HoloFed had time travelling adventures with the USS Relativity. In an aside, it is interesting to note that all these roleplays have their own custom maps. Whilst I dont believe that it itself is required to run a successful serial roleplay, it certainly helps, and days of constant stock and predictable RPG-X map use such as Poseidon-B, Runabout and Starfighter Command are numbered.

What do we do about staleness, though? Well how about Klingon Empire roleplays? Crew of a Bird of Prey? There are enough maps and skins to accomplish that. Ground base RPs? Plenty of stock and player-made HM maps to do that with - features arent everything: use your imagination and it could be quite good fun! Equally, consider the quote below:

Quote:
Ryan: Most recently, I CO'd a plot. Instead of having everyone on the bridge, I outlined the plot and gave everybody a job - specifically working with other people on the server. This was in preparation for a mission. Giving out these jobs meant that everybody had something to do and noone was bored or stuck. It meant that we could develop character whilst having a proper plot running in the background. It also in the end meant that everybody was so engrossed in what they were doing that I ended up bored in the CO position. Which I was happy about because that meant that everybody were hopefully enjoying themselves.

Embassies and Groups?
Quote:
Pille: this negativity has been there long before someone actually started naming the problem. When RPG-X 2 came out - and no offense to the developers - that was pretty much the time when this all started. In the beginning we had the big time of group forming, some instantly jumping to my mind are ST-RP and ERP who really could not stand each other at all. Their members showed a level of hostility towards each other that you'd expect for someone who just killed your best friend.

Embassies are utterly useless. Located on most roleplay group forums, these threads are aimed at establishing diplomatic relations with rival groups. Some administrators are convinced that making alliances will attract members and encourage inter-group roleplays. Whilst this may work for multiplayer clans and indeed other games where fleet actions are actually possible, it does nothing for Elite Force. A whole forum section dedicated to other groups is a waste. I think it is important to remember that each online server is the same. Aside from minor variations on what version of RPG-X is being run, language and a few rules, every server is the same. End of. It is what happens on them that makes a group popular or unique, which brings me to my next point.

There have been a lot of new roleplay groups started over recent months - are they needed? No. But do they harm anyone? No. Yet reading through forums, there is a lot of Oh no, not another group from veterans. Yes, we can laugh at their chances, its only fair, but I suppose some established groups are afraid that this is only splitting up the community farther and they will lose members. However, if your groups roleplay quality is high enough, youll retain your members as that is what matters in the end. I believe it is terribly pretentious to feel the need to have ambassadors and treaties with other clans. Indeed, if anything relationships with other groups are often sour. Weve had petty disputes and group wars, but what does that mean? You go over to the enemy server and frag them up a bit? Yeah, thats mature

Abolish embassies and support the unique and well written roleplays as they seem to be the ones that you will get the most out of.

N00bs?
Some community members are quick to blame the common uber-n00bs of the Elite Force community. Long time roleplayers all know of Acer, Alex Munro, John Smith (Reformed) and so on players that have been known to deliberately sabotage legitimate roleplays online either through Fragging or Plot jacking. But this blame is incredibly inaccurate and nave when considering these n00bs have not been seen for many months, nor did they seriously discourage players from roleplaying. No, they merely caused disruption to when RPs were actually running, and this hasnt been a major problem for at least a year.

Peer Pressure and Opinions?
Quote:
Pille: Over the last 2 years when the community grew smaller due to people simply moving on and away from that mentality, the groups started dying off and lost their "social status" in the community, so rather than having the group vs group thing we now have it all on a person vs person level. You're not seeing much of it these days any more but just looking back at some comments made during the FileFront closure time it became more than obvious how hostile some people can become. The word "alliance" against a single member comes to mind there.

It appears that a type of pseudo-social status has been created within the community. Without wanting to name names, I could almost draw a spider diagram of the communitys social structure (I actually could I did two years of Sociology at college dont wanna brag, but anyway), consisting of n00bs, new players, experienced players and group administrators. Not in that order, of course: some minor group administrators are treated differently by larger group commanders. Although it is true that developers and experienced (or imaginative) roleplayers should be respected, I fear that it is going too far. It shouldnt be like that. Everyone should be able to get on and play together as equals isnt that sort of logical and appropriate?

Quote:
Admiral Hocking: I do believe that some of us are indeed highly opinionated (myself included) - which can be intimidating at first, but if you actually sit and talk with people outside the game; we all do have a lot in common and generally I think we can all get along just fine - if we take the time to get to know each other a little bit. An example being that I have enjoyed some game time on Steam, more so earlier in the year, with a few of the people here that are not indigenous to HoloFed.

On a related note, an admins word is law is a nice enough sentiment, but depends a lot on the admin him or herself.
Quote:
Lazereth: Admin Powers. In RPG-X admins are literally gods, Controlling aspects of the world, Changing features and controlling mere mortals underneath them. I would like to disprove this common misinterpretation of this class... You see, People like the feeling of controlling others underneath them, It's human nature. But, Admin is simply a tool it isn't really something to aspire to, It's just to make the roleplay run smoother.

So, what do we do to tackle this? Simple: Play nice, fair, equal and dont get drawn into arguments or encourage those (and you know who you are) that are so opinionated on subjects that they must enforce it on anyone else. That certainly wont be tolerated at Elite Force Files and shouldnt be elsewhere in the EF community.

Nobody likes anything?
Quote:
Robertson: while beta testing [RP map Solaris] with Ryan (the creator) i did speak to him about this topic, and his reply simply was "If i was making this map for the community, i would of given up a long time ago" people keep looking on the darker side of the coin, i'm not saying i'm clean either, i'm guilty of the same crime but instead of focusing on positive aspects we tend to just give negative after negative after negative, in a constructive way mostly, however it does emphasize the whole 'negative community' feel.

What RPG-X really needs to regain players and drum up a bit of interest is an expansion pack. Something more than the odd patch here and the odd beta update there. Whilst I realise that the developers dont exactly have the time for this, there are still mappers that work hard to bring new content for the game as well as other media: the Star Trek: Unity machinima series has been criticized for bizarre storylines and nitpicked technically - yet nobody seems to care that it has been made using RPG-X with many community members involved. Jonathan Kent's XteX mod that retextured many maps and skins for a fresh look was equally as rejected, and one or two desperate players were badgering a poor RPG-X developer for a new beta version the other day, seemingly forgetting that the developers actually do this in their spare time. People are expecting everything all at once and are very impatient. Interestingly, it is similar with Single Player. The Star Trek: Freelance mod from Griffin Endurance is highly anticipated and yet a preview teaser was ripped apart by many users simply because it didnt have all the features that people wanted - even though it was advertised as just maps only. It will be done when its done stick out tongue Elite Force Files has had the least submissions ever in recent times both with files and news: this is not helping matters.

Conclusions:
As with any computer game, Elite Forces popularity and longevity will only last to a point. At almost ten years old, only the continued player submission of mods, maps and other content hosted at Elite Force Files and similar file sharing sites is keeping Elite Force going and attracting players, although that feat in itself (even if limited) is most impressive. The entire roleplay community of EF will be dealt a crippling blow when Star Trek: Online is released in the next couple of years, of that there is no doubt. Therefore, it is ironic that perhaps the part that will keep players using EF is multiplayer fragging as it continues to be the best Star Trek themed first-person shooter out there.

In any case, I ask players to consider my findings and evaluation of Elite Force community negativity and see how they can apply changes and improve roleplaying for everyone. Thank you for reading.

Good news from modder Daedalus, as he has sorted out his previous problem, and will now be continuing with his expansion pack and modding for EF2!

I managed to fix my opengl Error. and Now I can play big grin

The problem had nothing to do with graphics. I needed to defrag. That was it, and then it ran fine!

Expect to see me online soon!

Right, I guess I better get back to modding! wink

Terrific.

Elite Force Files - Update - Site News
  Posted by: Luke20 on 08-14-2009 @ 12:51
This News Item has been viewed 11101 times! Elite Force 2 News
Good Afternoon folks. I've just returned from a rather odd holiday in South Devon where I saw a bright pink tram and got hooked on Space Colony... But this isn't my blog, no, its an EFfiles news item, so let me give you people an update on the goings on here:

Now that Jamesamey and myself are coming back from resting our fragging fingers, the reviews for recent files will be added (using Library computers on holiday, I only had time to validate some of the files). I've already started today by reviewing the two "Scav-Pro" maps that were submitted a week or so ago, so expect more of those over the coming week. Equally, the various guides and pages about the two Elite Force games we have (accessable on the left-hand side menu) are being updated and re-written. I mean, that cheat list was last updated in 2004 or something. Dreadful. wink

Next, I'd like to thank you regular users of the site for sticking around and sending stuff in whilst Filefront has been refitted and re-servered following the "April Fools" incident you'll all remember. Although the voting on polls and pictures is still down (you'll agree that this last problem is getting a little silly and tedious, now), things are picking up, and hopefully everything will be back to 'normal' soon. Please address any further specific problems or complaints to the Filefront forums, as the tech-side of the sites are out of mere admins' hands. stick out tongue

Lastly, we once again need more pictures of the day from you guys. After a steady rush of submissions last month that we have gladly been posting, our supplies are now low. I would ask, however, that new submissions are just that: new. So no more "Joe" pictures, and no more "oh-wow-this-looks-cool,-lets-take-a-screenshot-from-every-angle-and-submit-them-all". Lets have a bit of fresh stuff. We are, however, always happy to see various previews of a new map or mod, so get uploading!

Happy Times and Places. smile
