| | RPG-X Complete Edition Released! - Mods Posted by: Luke20 on 04-16-2011 @ 09:28 - Source: http://www.last-outpost.net/ | | | This News Item has been viewed 11048 times! | Elite Force News | The Last Outpost (last-outpost.net, TLO) announced today that its all-in-one RPG-X installer, RPG-X Complete Edition, is being released to the public this weekend after nearly two months working to secure permission for its distribution.
RPGXCE allows users to perform quick installations of a full, working RPG-X - no Elite Force game needed. It includes the Last Outpost rankset, the latest ioCow release, and a full install of the latest RPG-X beta, including the rpg_runabout and rpg_poseidon maps. It does not require Elite Force to run, and does not contain the full Elite Force game.
TLO has reached agreements with Raven Software, developer of Star Trek: Elite Force, and with CBS Entertainment, holder of the Star Trek trademark, which will allow it to distribute this new program to the entire Elite Force/RPG-X community free of charge. RPGXCE is currently available from http://www.last-outpost.net/, and will also be available soon from Elite Force Files.
To learn more, read official announcement, download RPGXCE from The Last Outpost, or contact Veritas with your questions here, via e-mail at veritas@last-outpost.net, or on the site.
More information and an EFFiles version will be available very soon! TLO thanks the RPG-X and Elite Force communities for their patience and support, and looks forward to a bright future. | | |

I thought they were a good bunch to be honest, in fact, they were a little more friendlier than the main characters in EF1 lol
Instead of 'I'm busy', their replies would be something like 'Hey Munro! You alright mate?'
I mean, I will never forget when you speak to Kenn before the etherian mission, he says in a very cheerful way 'Hey hey Munro what's up?' It's a shame they had to kill him. Odell was a nice character too, But then he was in EF2 as well but was not a featured character.
There was a Beta squad on the Enterprise, but you never saw them. They should have done more with them.
They're just little backup characters. Why are you making a question like this about them?
They probably could have been fleshed out more had you more contact with them, but they're just there to be part of another squad that does work elsewhere.
@#3
Because details bring a game to life and make it feel more real and entertaining, there for this question is to be asked if you are aware of such things.
Like the Holo Doctor heals you up in one mission on the Voyager, such things are details which put more in a game than just guns and enemies.
I realize, and Elite Force has a lot of detail. I possibly notice that the most out of all of you guys. I'm just saying that Beta Squad aren't that important comparative to the other main and supporting characters.

The last outpost is a useless website that restricts information unless you are a FULL member. Requires unnecessary downloads (such as Windows messenger live) for FULL membership. Personally, I don't see it making much of a difference.
What is needed is a group that all communication is done on the website to reduce unnecessary downloads. All files should be accessible to everyone. And lastly if I register an account I should be considered an active member not a glorified guest.
Before you get destroyed for that comment, as I suspect you might, take a look here, at the news story that created this topical poll!
http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/news/Introducing_Project_Retool_An_All_New_Last_Outpost;49209
Nobody will care, Star Trek: Online is where it is at.
I agree with the first poster. Not releasing it for everyone is pretty selfish. If someone's a TLO member, it probably means they've already tried RPG-X and like it. This RPGXCE will not make a lick of difference to anyone. No one will need it, and no one who might want it will be able to use it. If TLO is smart, they'll amend their decision and release it to EFfiles so everyone can use it, but for now, no one's going to care, and it's not going to make any real difference to the RPG-X community. I am disappointed in TLO.
-Photonic
Actually maybe I was wrong about them. Apparently, they're speaking with Ravensoft about a way to distribute the installer "widely, freely, and completely legally." Well, I certainly hope so. I've always liked TLO, I just didn't like *this* decision.
-Photonic
It's always good to look for the bigger picture
Well that was definitely a helpful comment. Shoot, why didn't I think of the "bigger picture" before. I absolutely now understand everything.
-Photonic
There is no need to be snarky, Photonic.
Snarky? Nice word. However, I consider myself sarcastic. Don't take it personally, I'm like that all the time, for fun - it's not intended to offend.
-Photonic
Firstly, I thank you Luke for your concern about getting destroyed.
I read that article on their website and was excited at first. I created an account, but found I still could do nothing on the website. There were forums but none were geared specifically for those who were the 1/2 members, and I needed extra downloads that I wouldn't likely use on a regular basis and could not justify the used hard drive space.
I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I just thought personally that from what I saw it wasn't that amazing and in the long run it wasn't worth the extra time. If anyone disagrees I would like to hear why. You may even get me to change my mind.
Unnecessary downloads such as?
Our classset and rankset which is less than 1mb, you can't be referring to that as it is needed to connect to our server.
We use MSN to facilitate communication within the group. Sometimes we need to have discussions that are real-time and not on display for other members.
What else are you referring to?
Hi everyone,
I'm Veritas, one of The Last Outpost's Councilors and developer of the RPG-X Complete Edition program. I think it might be prudent for me to answer some questions and meet some concerns I see here.
First off, full membership in TLO is (we believe) exceptionally easy and open to everyone. You are not required to be active or to do anything other than fill out the application form, however, we do ask for an MSN or hotmail address because when we arrange events for active members, that's how we do it. We have, in the past, waived this requirement - however, that is something you would need to ask about in your application. As it says in the registration agreement, registering on our forum is only one step in the process. We think using MSN is not a huge thing to ask, but I'm sorry some have found it to be excessive. Again, full membership is free and open to all, and always will be.
Now, why do we ask that people become full members before trying RPGXCE? Why haven't we released it to the whole community yet? Simple - we're still preparing to do so. RPGXCE was created with the knowledge that even if it was successful, it would be very difficult for us to legally distribute it. We cannot host it here on EFFiles, as it would violate their copyright regulations, and we cannot distribute it publically ourselves, as we would very likely be asking for trouble with RavenSoft or Activsion (not to mention how our server hosts would feel about the bandwidth!). In addition, the current version of RPGXCE is not a full and complete product - it's version 1.0, yes, but it's still very much a proof of concept and a test.
We have are speaking with Ravensoft, and are working with them to find a way to distribute RPGXCE openly and with their blessing. This is something they've allowed in the past, for example, for the Expansion Pack textures available here on this very site - but it is not a process which happens quickly, especially since Activision owns Elite Force, Paramount owns Star Trek, and there are lots of intellectual property rules caught in the middle. How widely we can distribute it (if at all) depends on what RavenSoft is willing to allow us.
The best case scenario is that we release it to the whole community, put it here on EFFiles, and allow redistribution so that everyone can try it. The worst case is that it remains with our membership only, or worse, that we cannot distribute it at all. It's also possible we could wind up somewhere in between - i. e., non members have to "request" it from us before we can provide it to them. I can't speculate on which of these it's going to be, but I can tell you that our site will have all that information as soon as it's available to us, in the publically viewable Project Retool thread (http://last-outpost.net/forum/index.php?topic=839.0).
Again, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to comment, and for checking out TLO. I'd like to apologize to those who were dissatisfied - I remain confident that TLO's got a lot to offer RPG-X and everyone here, and hopeful that we can reach an agreement both with EFFiles and RavenSoft which will make RPGXCE available to those who need it.
Thanks, I like it too.
Well, there you have it. Thanks for the update, Veritas, and for clearing us all up on what exactly is going on. I should like to apologize for taking an initially harsh stance - I did not realize the full details of the situation. Thanks again!
-Photonic
No problem - glad I was able to clear everything up. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to let me know on here or via TLO's site, email or MSN (they're on my profile).
I'll keep everyone updated as soon as I learn more.
We have already seen a few new faces, which is great!
I think it will sure bring some people back!
The only reason I stopped playing RPG-X was because there was too much downloading involved!
#17, sarcasm or not? Cant tell.
I think nobody will notice, at least not many.
The ones that have EF1 already either still play or moved on, but might come back.
No change there.
The ones that are willing to download probably already pirated it.
The ones that have done neither either dont know about or want the game, and those that do probably wont think that there even is a legal way to get such a pack legally and wont bother looking.
In all honesty I have to agree with #18. The only way this will really become a "big thing" is if Ravensoft gives its approval for this to become public, it is hosted on EFfiles, and an advertising campaign is undertaken to promote it. If that happened, then I think it might bring in new people. RPG-X remains the best Star Trek RPG option to this day, people just don't know about it. This RPGXCE has the potential to make RPG-X an accessible and better-known game among the Star Trek community. For all our sakes, I hope Ravensoft gives their O.K. for it to be public.
-Photonic
I'd like to stress that what we're offering is not Elite Force - it's RPG-X, a mod based on Elite Force that allows for freeform, live and interactive roleplay. We've created an installer that allows us to distribute this easily and quickly, with a minimum of hassle, and I think it was the hassle of finding, purchasing, installing, and updating a copy of EF and then RPG-X on top of it that has made RPG-X not worth trying for many people.
In addition, we do have a marketing campaign of sorts - including discussions and relationships with other RP sites and Trek forums, advertising online, and word of mouth campaigns - in the works. However, that's not something we're prepared to kickstart until we have something to show.
While I realize that there is entirely a possibility our efforts could fall through, that we could gain no new members (TLO as a group or the community as a whole), or that our time might be wasted, in my book any gain is a success - and here's why: TLO already has over forty "full" members and twice that number of forum users. We already host three weekly SRPs and two events a month, all of which attract regular groups of 6-10 people on our server. We're not big by any means in terms of Internet group size, but we're close-knit and we have a lot of fun. I want to share that enjoyable experience with others, and RPGXCE is only a tool to help me do that.
Even if RPGXCE is blocked by Ravensoft, or even if our efforts fail in the long term, I'll still play RPG-X and I'll still be active for as long as it remains an enjoyable experience. I'd love to get more people into it, but I'm here either way, and anyone new who tries it out is a success to me.
No Ober, there is no sarcasm. I think it will bring some people back to playing!
Ok, maybe I am wrong, but that is what I think.
Beergarden.org/bg2 offers a free download of Elite force, so that will bring new players who may wish to download RPG-X.
I think we should make it clear that the Garden only offers the MULTIPLAYER part of the download, not the full game. Don't want Ravensoft going after them. Well, they still might, but we should make it clear that it's only just what's needed for online play.
-Photonic
I see. Well i wasnt sure, downloading some files doesnt seam like much work and there was the smiley.
Our installer is in fact based off the Beer Garden verion, but as the Beer Garden site notes, without permission from Ravensoft it's still legally quite questionable.
