Ancient Stargate (1.0) - File Description

Tech: 8
Quality: 9
FunFactor: 10
Creativity: 8

Overall Rating: 8.8

Developer LocutusOfBorg isn't one to churn out map after map in a frenzy, but boy do his maps rock when he does release them. This is the Ancient Stargate map which includes two interesting and ancient planets that you can travel to through a titular Milky-way Stargate (from Stargate SG-1).

What makes this map particually exciting is the fact that the Stargate can be activated and deactivated using the DHD rather than just being permanantly open, and this comes complete with correct sounds and the infamous opening kawoosh (which sounds terrible and is all wrong, and doesn't kill you, but is fantastic all the same)! For me, the most interesting and fun side of the gate is the alien planet island, with its fantastic skybox and lots to explore... a small village (with dynamic-like lighting and a well), a forest and even a moat-lake surrounding a mountain. The "Earth" side is set in Egypt in a Pyramid, presumably during Ra's reign of the planet. There are two secrets in the map, one on each world, so get exploring to find them both! wink

This map would be great fun in holomatch and even RPG-X (like I said: good alien planet), so get downloading now!

~ Luke20 ("The Tenth Doctor").

After downloading this map, put the file "ancient_stargate.pk3" into your baseEF folder (by Default
this is C:Program FilesRavenStar Trek Voyager Elite ForcebaseEf)
Launch STV:EF and bring down the console (with the tilde key) and type "map ancient_stargate"
(Without quotes)

If the game crashes with a com_hunkmegs error, and you will need to increase this variable either
in your hmconfig.cfg, or from within STV:EF, to do the latter, launch STV:EF and bring down the
console and type "seta com_hunkMegs 256" (without quotes)

Make sure you have a "USE" key bound to a key in order to activate the DHD (dial home device) in
order to open the Stargate.

This map is of two planets set in ancient times, one is in Egypt, Earth, and the other is on an
island on an alien planet.

To Travel between these planets, you will have to press "use" on one of the DHD's, the gates will
start to dial, and shortly afterwards a wormhole is opened (complete with kawoosh) the gates will
remain open for a short time.

On Earth, you are in a temple with the doors locked, on the other planet, you are outside
on an island surrounded by hot lava (which heats the central islands watery moat) the planet also
has strange weather.

There are two secrets, one on each planet, see if you can find them (They are also 'camper proof' so don't think of hiding in there, you will eventually die).

The rather large mushrooms are jumppads incase you didnt notice.

Unfortunately bots are not compatible on this map, they cannot navigate the terrain, so bot support is missing, they wouldn't be able to dial the gate anyway)

For stargate fans, I am aware of the inconsistencies, such as the gate dialling faster than "normal"
and the fact that the gate addresses are fixed (although different on each side)

Unfortunately due to the complexity of the map pushing the Quake engine to the limits, there is a
low frame rate (on some slower computers at least) when you are on the "alien" side of the gate.
This is partly due to not having visibility compiled on the map (if I did, the game crashes).

Also, I had to omit a great feature of the map: a TARDIS materialising and dematerialising at
intervals between each of the planets (joined by the gate). The TARDIS had full special effects and sound effect, I had to sadly drop this from the map, as the map was too complex as it was, and this was causing crashes on the final compile
I had the intention of adding player models of the 10th doctor and Rose, these were partially made, and will hopefully be in another release along with the TARDIS.

I have been working on this map on and off for a year, and recently restarted it for "Sparky's summer mapping challege", which alas was cancelled.

Unique Features
Working Stargate, dial able, with SFX.
It rains on the alien planet at random intervals
Steam and bubbling effects in the water around the central island (normally steam cannot go upwards
the water is also bubbling.

Dynamic lighting effects in the huts (as you may have seen in the preview of my asylum map)
flickering lighting caused by the candles.

Weapon/health dispensers (modified from the ones I created for holosphere map)

Software Compatibility
Compatible with all versions of Star trek Voyager:Elite Force
The map is compatible with FFA, Team and CTF, each planet under control by each team.

A Thank you to the following people for helping me test this map during the multiple stages of
progress, and encouraging me to finish it.

Dr. Morbius
Tenth Doctor

Thanks to Shaun for the alien skybox.

Thanks to phenix for the gate models from
as you will see from my comment, back in February 2008, the prefab does not work when moved, so I
had to completely redo the mechanics of the gate dialling, only retaining the md3 model files and
some sounds.

I never thought I would see a decent stargate map in Elite Force again.

It all kind went 'meh' after Wades stargate maps.

Thank you LocutusOfBorg.
